It was called the “Little Notre Dame of the East.” The time was post-war America. The Basilian run school, Aquinas Institute of Rochester, New York, had big plans for its high school football team.Coach Harry Wright, former Notre Dame grid star, had built the team into a national powerhouse. Crowds averaging 18,000 watched Aquinas take on top teams from Michigan, New Jersey, Texas, and even Father Flanagan’s football team of Boys Town, Nebraska.
Aquinas football was big time. “When Football Was Bigger Than Life” takes an in-depth look at the rise of the Aquinas football program and the times in which it thrived.
Witness Rochester’s first high school football team at century’s turn. See the young grid iron legends Paul Brown, Doc Blanchard, Glen Davis and the famed Massillon Tigers. Look back on the Rochester Jeffersons, a charter member of the National Football League, and the spirited business-sponsored semi-pro teams of the city.
“When Football Was Bigger Than Life” is a documentary that any football fan or history buff will find fascinating.
